Saffron Francis is a contemporary illustrator hailing from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and enriched by her Trinidadian-Canadian heritage. Her artistic journey began as a child, sparked by the quest for affordable ways to express creativity. Amid this exploration, the humble ballpoint pen emerged as an accessible and cost-effective tool that held a world of potential.
Throughout her teenage years, Saffron found solace and an outlet for her anxiety through art, particularly by illustrating urban creatures. As she grappled with her own challenges and underwent talk therapy, her art became a way to confront issues and release tension. Her creations spotlight urban wildlife that silently shares our surroundings, a testament to their tenacity despite the pressures placed upon them by our urban lives. Through her work, she reimagines these creatures, shedding light on the struggles that mirror our own.
Saffron's academic journey culminated in a BFA Degree from OCAD University in Toronto, Canada. Her exceptional skills have led to collaborations with esteemed brands like Dior, BVLGARI, Creed, Shea Moisture and Tridel developers. Personalizing perfume bottles and product boxes using an array of mediums - from paint and markers to ink and an engraving machine.
Notably, Saffron is an active participant in Daniels Spectrum’s Arts Mentorship Program, further highlighting her commitment to artistic growth and community engagement.
With the support of her mentor, her first grant marked a significant milestone. The pinnacle was her debut Solo Show, titled "Identity," showcased at the vibrant heart of Regent Park, Daniels Spectrum, in 2022.
Focused on how the standards of hair shaped the psychology of black woman today, it was a visual art exhibit that inspired conversations about the history of hair being a symbol of one’s identity.
While Saffron is currently based in Toronto, she continues to actively collaborate with prestigious brands around the world and engage in creative projects with Artscape. Amidst her busy schedule, she is dedicated to refining her personal artwork and nurturing the aspiration of holding her own exhibition in the near future.
